Wintertime is here, which means some downtime for our rigs as we spend less time out and about through inclement weather. This is an optimal time to focus on maintenance for our rigs and camping gear, so everything is ready to roll come spring! I typically focus on a very in-depth vehicle 360, starting with wheels and tires and working my way up from there. Look for dry rot, cracking, or damage to your tires or major damage to your wheels. Moving to the underside of the vehicle, make sure that you get under there and check for any damage that happened while out on the trail. Check those skid plates to make sure they can continue to do their job! Suspension components can be re-torqued and checked for excessive play, also driveline components like u-joints, ball joints, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and all those pesky wearable items that keep us rolling. Get under the hood and check all those fluids, not only to make sure they are filled but also that they don't need to be replaced. Things like brake fluid should be bled and replaced at least twice a year! Don't forget about those serpentine belts and heater hoses; make sure that the cooling system is in tip-top shape! I deep dive into my recovery gear in the winter, not just because I will be using it more but also because it’s a great time to clean and inspect for damage. Nothing like catching some damage to your winch line and splicing it in a warm garage vs. freezing on the trail! Don't fret if you aren't mechanically inclined; most good off-road shops will complete an all-inclusive vehicle 360 for a small fee.
